November 2014

Interesting Thought… Do you know of a woman who is beginning to realize that the world is an imperfect, dangerous place and that she needs to learn how to shoot in order to be able to protect herself…or knows she needs to learn to shoot but is uncomfortable handling firearms? Then here is something to consider…

Most formal firearms training classes go over a lot of academic information before the student is given the opportunity to actually handle the firearm and do some shooting. However, some people just need to be given the opportunity to handle a firearm and shoot it (under proper guidance and instruction) first without a lot of academics just to learn that they can, indeed, actually shoot a firearm and that it can be a lot of fun. Once they do that initial shooting and become more comfortable with shooting a handgun they are better able to decide what their next step(s) should be.

Riclin Firearms training has developed a short introductory handgun class that enables women who have never fired a handgun before to learn the basic safety rules, how to load the handgun, properly grip the handgun, align the sights and pull the trigger…and shoot with a reasonable degree of accuracy. We have used this approach with several women and have found it to be very successful. In fact, once they realize that the handgun isn’t going to bite them they tend to become excited and want to shoot more. It is amazing to see the confidence these women have shown after the 2 hour shooting session. Also included is a discussion to help the woman decide what her next step should be regarding handguns.

Please consider passing this along to those women.

Calling All Couples… Riclin Firearms Training and SAFE in Las Cruces will be offering a class tailored for couples in Las Cruces on January 24 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This class will focus on couples working together as a team. It will include both daylight and night sessions and will feature scenarios similar to what couples may encounter. This class is NOT for beginners. Couples must have a concealed carry license or similar training (this will be strictly enforced). Couples with a non shooting member will be considered on an individual basis. For more information or to sign up for the class contact Richard at of Coralie at

Personal, Individualized Firearms Training… If you are interested in personal, individualized firearms training for yourself, you and a group of your friends, or for your business contact me and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs. We’ll begin by consulting with you to determine what your training needs are or what you would like to accomplish. Together we’ll decide how to best meet those needs. Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Advanced Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals, businesses or small groups. Classes can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Scheduling is very flexible.

Regular Monthly Announcements (Reminders)…

You need to take a Refresher (re-qualification) course two years after you receive your New Mexico concealed handgun license and you need to take a Renewal class and apply to NMDPS for your concealed carry license to be renewed after four years. Take a look at your license periodically and make sure you take those classes. If you are in need of either the Refresher or Renewal classes, contact me and we can schedule your class.

To Learn Which Restaurants Sell Beer and Wine Only… You may carry your concealed handgun in a restaurant in New Mexico that is licensed to sell beer and wine only. This is known as a Restaurant License. Go to and do a search. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a restaurant license in that particular county. And remember… you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

Tip of the Month… When you are with your spouse or significant other, take a few minutes and discuss what role each of you would play in the event that you all found yourself in a self defense situation. The last thing you want is to find yourself in such a situation and neither one of you has any idea what the other is going to do. That could be catastrophic. Take a few minutes and work out how you would work together to defend yourselves. Note…this will be part of our Couples Class in January.

In closing… At the gun show this week end I spoke with a number of women who indicated they were interested in our introductory handgun class for women. I also had several couples interested in the January 24 Couples Class. Thank you all for your interest and support of our training efforts!
