November 2012

Interesting Thought… After reading about the 12 year old girl in southeast Oklahoma who recently used a handgun to protect herself from a home invader, after calling her mother and asking her what to do, I decided to post the following question to you all…What have you done to prepare your family (and yourself for that matter) to enable them to respond to a home invasion? Think about that for a moment…if you received a phone call from a family member who is at home, telling you that someone was breaking into the house, would you be able to assist them in effectively defending themselves as this young girl did?

Have you had any discussion with other family members about what to do in the event they are confronted, whether at home or in the community? The NRA has an excellent class, Personal Protection in the Home, that you might consider for you and your family.

Something to think about…

Concealed Carry Class… Next regular class is November 10 & 11 and since November 11 is Veteran’s Day, I’ll give a big discount to any veteran who takes the class that week end. Completion of this class meets the training requirement for a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License and enables you to apply for that license. If you have any questions, or would like to sign up for the class, contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040.

Facebook… Riclin Firearms Training, LLC is now on Facebook! Be sure to visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/riclinfirearmsllc and ‘like’ us.

Concealed Carry in New Mexico State Parks… There was a hearing in Santa Fe on October 17 on a regulation change that would allow concealed carry in state parks. An NRA representative and several concealed carry instructors spoke in favor of the regulation change and no one spoke against it. You may still submit written comments backing the proposed rule change by email to april.alvarado@state.nm.us or by regular mail to April Alvarado, EMNRD State Parks Division, 1220 S. St. Francis Drive, Santa Fe, NM 87505 by no later than 5:00 p.m. October 31. Thanks for your support of this regulation change. I’ll keep you posted.

Personal Firearms Training… Are you interested in a personal firearms trainer? Want to improve your shooting skills or focus on a particular skill or get ready for a hunting trip? Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Advanced Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals or small groups. Scheduling is very flexible. For more information about personal firearms training contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs.

Refresher and Renewal… Don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). I have been doing these classes on request, so when you need your Refresher or Renewal please contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 and we’ll set up a time for your class.

New search site for going out to eat… To determine if the restaurant you want to go to has a restaurant license, go to http://rldverification.rld.state.nm.us/Verification/Search.aspx?facility=Y
and search for a Restaurant License in the appropriate county. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a beer and wine license in that particular county. And remember…you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

Tip of the Month… Do a Home Defense Audit. Have you ever considered how you are going to defend yourself in your home? Simply having a firearm is not enough. Have you looked at ways to make unwanted entry into your home more difficult? Do you have a safe room where everyone can go and be safe while you are waiting for law enforcement to arrive? Have you considered, in the event that you are forced to defend yourself and your family in your home, how you are going to do that? Do you have an emergency plan that covers not only what to do in case of fire or natural disaster, but home invasion as well? And go back and re-read the Interesting Thought at the beginning of this newsletter.

In closing… The holidays are fast approaching. It is time to increase your awareness and be extra cautious. Live Defensively and Stay Safe!
