June – July 2012

Important New Mexico Reciprocity Information (Part 2)… Things seem to have stabilized for the moment with the re-establishment of reciprocity with most of the states listed in March. However, NM DPS says they are continuing to look at the reciprocity issue. For up to date information check the NM DPS Reciprocity website at http://www.dps.nm.org/index.php/nm-concealed-carry/reciprocity-agreements/ for the current status of the reciprocity agreements. If you are a New Mexico concealed carry license holder planning on traveling www.handgunlaw.us advises you to call ahead to make sure your New Mexico concealed carry license is still honored in the states you are anticipating traveling in.

Night Class… July 12 in Las Cruces…I am teaming up with Coralie Carrier of SAFE in Las Cruces to offer a night class at the Butterfield Park Shooting range just west of Las Cruces. We will start at 7:00 pm and finish around 10:00 pm. If you are ever forced to use your handgun in self defense, it will very likely be at night or in low light conditions. If you have any questions, or would like to sign up for the class, contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040.

Refresher and Renewal… Don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). I have been doing these classes on request, so when you need your Refresher or Renewal please contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 and we’ll set up a time for your class.

Tip of the Month… Flying with your handgun…I had the opportunity to fly to Alaska for two weeks at the end of May (which is one of the reasons this newsletter is late). I took two handguns with me and found it quite easy to fly with my handguns. The handguns must be unloaded and in a locked case in your check in luggage. Only you can have a key to the case. Ammunition must be in boxes designed to carry ammunition (the original factory box is fine). You must declare to the ticket agent at the ticket counter that you have unloaded firearms in your luggage. I was able to get both handguns and a box of ammunition for each in the case. Mac’s Guide to Flying with a Firearm, found here http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1304715, is an excellent source of information. Be sure to download the information on flying with a firearm from both the TSA web site and the website of the airline you are flying on. The TSA web site provides more general guidelines and your airline’s web site will have specifics on what that particular airline requires.

In closing… I just wanted to take a moment and thank you all for your support over the years. I have enjoyed working with each of you and just wanted to say thanks. And I look forward to working with you in the future.
