January 2015

Interesting Thought… The recent accidental shooting death of an Idaho woman in Walmart by her 2 year old son who found her legally concealed handgun in her purse is a terrible tragedy. Our prayers and sympathy go out to the family. But this was a senseless tragedy that could (and should) have been prevented.

As one of my students commented in an email… ‘An incredibly tragic story.  This should remind us all that we can never take our responsibilities as a CCW holder for granted.’

That is absolutely correct! It is too easy to become complacent, especially if you are an experienced concealed carrier. But you can never let you guard down. You are responsible for what you do with that weapon. And if you let someone get hold of it through your carelessness you must accept some responsibility for what happens with it. And like that family, you will probably regret it for the rest of you life.

Also, for those of you who carry in a purse (or utilize some other off body method of carry) it might be a good time to reconsider, to see if you can figure out a way to carry on your body. On body carry certainly eliminates the likelihood of someone taking your handgun out of your purse.

Putting on that handgun, whether openly or concealed, is a huge responsibility. Always remember that!

Renewal and Refresher classes: I am doing Renewal and Refresher classes on request. If you need your Renewal or Refresher let me know and we’ll schedule your class. I have been doing these classes individually or in small groups for some time now and people seem to like this way of doing the classes.
If you are interested in a particular class that isn’t currently in our calendar, or have a group of friends you would like to take a class with, let me know and we’ll make it happen.

Calling All Couples… Riclin Firearms Training and SAFE in Las Cruces will be offering a class tailored for couples in Las Cruces on January 24 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This class will focus on couples working together as a team. It will include both daylight and night sessions and will feature scenarios similar to what couples may encounter. This class is NOT for beginners. Couples must have a concealed carry license or similar training (this will be strictly enforced). Couples with a non shooting member are also encouraged to attend. For more information or to sign up for the class contact Richard at riclin@tularosa.net or Coralie at safeinlc@aol.com.

2nd Annual Ladies Concealed Carry Clinic… The Otero Practical Shooting Association and First Alarm and Security, along with Riclin Firearms Training, are sponsoring their second annual ladies concealed carry clinic on Saturday March 7 from 9:00 until approximately 3:00. The morning will be devoted to working with defensive shooting drills. After lunch, which will be provided, there will be a fun IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) competition for the ladies to enable them to apply the skills they practiced in the morning. This clinic is not for beginners. Ladies must have (or recently applied for) a concealed carry license.

Run and Gun Events…  We are in the process of training for the WesTex Run and Gun event which will be held near Ft. Davis, TX on February 7. If you are interested in training for this 5 mile running/walking and shooting event please let me know. I’d be happy to work with you.

Open Carry Class… Do you open carry or are you interested in learning more about it? We have developed a class that covers things that you need to know if you are going to open carry in New Mexico. In addition there is a shooting session with defensive shooting drills.

Personal, Individualized Firearms Training… If you are interested in personal, individualized firearms training for yourself, you and a group of your friends, or for your business contact me and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs. We’ll begin by consulting with you to determine what your training needs are or what you would like to accomplish. Together we’ll decide how to best meet those needs. Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals, businesses or small groups. Classes can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Scheduling is very flexible.

You need to take a Refresher (re-qualification) course two years after you receive your New Mexico concealed handgun license and you need to take a Renewal class and apply to NMDPS for your concealed carry license to be renewed after four years. Take a look at your license periodically and make sure you take those classes. If you are in need of either the Refresher or Renewal classes, contact me and we can schedule your class.

To Learn Which Restaurants Sell Beer and Wine Only… You may carry your concealed handgun in a restaurant in New Mexico that is licensed to sell beer and wine only. This is known as a Restaurant License. Go to http://rldverification.rld.state.nm.us/Verification/Search.aspx?facility=Y and do a search. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a restaurant license in that particular county. And remember… you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

Tip of the Month… Do you have a handgun (or shotgun or rifle) in your bedroom for when ‘things go bump in the night?’ And some sort of a flashlight? Most of us do. However, when was the last time you practiced getting to it? In the dark? And when was the last time you tried the light to make sure the batteries are still good? You need to practice/drill with your bedroom defensive weapon and equipment just as you do with your daily carry weapon. And if you are sleeping with someone they need to be involved. You need to be able to work as a team (or at least know what roles each will play in a self defense scenario). Think about it, talk about it, and then practice!

In closing… Start the year off right. Check your concealed carry license today and see if you will need a Refresher or Renewal this year and put it on your calendar. You would be surprised how many people call me in a panic because they have passed the deadline. Put it on your calendar now and give me a call or email me when you are ready and we’ll set something up.
