January 2013

Interesting Thought… Current events have demonstrated that violence can occur anywhere, anytime and on very short notice. What would you do if you were in a mall, movie theater, church or other public place and someone started shooting innocent people? Think about this for a moment. What have you done to prepare yourself for such an event? Do you carry your handgun all the time or do you keep it stored in your dresser drawer or vehicle glove box and carry it only when you think you might need it? Have you trained for or visualized your response to such an active shooter event? Have you done any shooting under stress?

The circumstances will, to a certain extent, determine your response. But if you haven’t thought about it ahead of time, and trained for such a situation, you may well become a victim while you are deciding how or whether to respond.

Think about it… what have you done to prepare?

States That Accept Your NM Concealed Handgun License… There have been some recent changes in the states that accept the NM concealed handgun license. Specifically Wyoming and Delaware no longer accept the NM license. The current (as of 12/25/12)  list of states that do accept the NM license, according to www.handgunlaw.us, are AK, AR, AZ, CO, FL, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NV, OH, OK, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV. If you plan on traveling be sure to check their website to see where your NM license is valid.

January Concealed Carry Class… The next concealed carry class will be January 12 & 13. Completion of this class meets the training requirement for a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License and enables you to apply for that license. If you have any questions, or would like to sign up for the class, contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040.

Free Ladies Shooting Clinic… We will be sponsoring a free ladies shooting clinic on Sunday February 17 from 2 pm – 4 pm at the Sidney Paul Gordon Shooting Range in La Luz. You will need 100 rounds of ammunition for your handgun, extra magazines/speed loaders, holster and eye and ear protection. Note…this clinic is not for beginners…it will be an opportunity to practice your practical shooting skills. To help us in our planning for this clinic please let me know at riclin@tularosa.net if you are planning to attend. If you are a beginner interested in learning to shoot a handgun please contact me as well.

Concealed Carry in New Mexico State Parks… Effective January 1, 2013 you will be able to carry concealed handguns in NM state parks. The amended regulation has been posted at http://www.nmcpr.state.nm.us/nmregister/xxiii/xxiii24/19.5.2amend.htm. Scroll down to Section 19.5.2.21 (Firearms and Bows) for the exact wording. Many thanks to all who assisted in enabling this change to occur.

Personal Firearms Training… Are you interested in a personal firearms trainer? Want to improve your shooting skills or focus on a particular skill or get ready for a hunting trip? Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Advanced Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals or small groups. Scheduling is very flexible. For more information about personal firearms training contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs.

Refresher and Renewal… I know you are tired of me reminding you, but a lot of people have trouble doing their Refresher or Renewal classes on time. So, don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). I have been doing these classes on request, so when you need your Refresher or Renewal please contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 and we’ll set up a time for your class.

If you are going out to eat… To determine if the restaurant you want to go to has a restaurant license, go to http://rldverification.rld.state.nm.us/Verification/Search.aspx?facility=Y
and search for a Restaurant License in the appropriate county. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a beer and wine license in that particular county. And remember…you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

A Reminder about Facebook… Riclin Firearms Training, LLC is now on Facebook! Be sure to visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/riclinfirearmsllc and ‘like’ us. And you are welcome to post comments as well.

Tip of the Month… If you have your concealed carry license, carry your gun! Like wearing seat belts when in a car, you have no idea when you will need them, so you wear them all the time! You have no idea when you may need your handgun, but if and when you do need it, nothing else will do.

In closing…There will be an effort to increase gun control as a result of the recent shootings. Please communicate with your elected representatives, both at the state and national levels, on a regular basis and express your opposition to any more regulation of your second amendment rights. I look forward to training with you in 2013!

  1. Riclin Firearms Training,

Great Website. Great info for those who what to obtain or have obtained a NM permit/license to carry.

I also see you updated the states that honor NM. I see you removed WY. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that.
I put in some questions to the WY AG about conflicting info the WY State Patrol was putting out on who WY honored. They had a list that was 3 years old. They contacted me by phone to answer my questions and they told me 6 weeks ago they were going to remove NM from their list but they were updating their whole site and it would be 2 or 3 weeks. It has been 6 weeks or longer now. So WY at this time still lists NM but that could change in a heartbeat and believe you should still list WY as no go for NM permit/license holders.

WY should have removed NM in late March 2012 as WY law states they will honor anyone who honors them. NM dropped them but they still have not removed it. But they will. Just wanted you to know about what WY was doing.

Again Great website and the info you have is great. Thank you for taking the time to do that. I know many appreciate it but then most will never let you know that. So for all of them Thank you for all you do.

    Stay safe,
    Gary Slider
