Interesting Thought… The situation and circumstances in Ferguson Missouri have a valuable lesson for those who carry a handgun for personal protection. Whether you agree with the Grand Jury’s findings or not, there is no doubt that the lives of those involved have been changed forever. One family lost a son, a difficult thing regardless of the circumstances. The police officer involved has had his life changed forever as well. While you may never go through the national scrutiny that he has in the event that you are involved in a self defense shooting, the fact remains that when you pull the trigger things will never be the same. People will look at you and treat you differently. There will be those who were not there who will be looking to prove you at fault. Think about the emotional and financial cost of dealing with the aftermath of a self defense shooting, including the legal and civil issues. All this is no reason not to carry a handgun for your personal protection, but is definitely something you should think about and be aware of. And be sure that pulling that trigger is the right thing to do and is the absolute last resort to staying safe. Because your life will change, forever…

Run and Gun Events… If you have been following my Facebook page you know that I have an interest in Run and Gun events. These are usually 4 – 6 mile running (walking in my case) cross country events that include a number of shooting stops. I have recently been made aware of two additional events I’d like to share with you. The WesTex Run ‘n Gun (http://www.westexrun-n-gun.com/Home_Page.html) will be held on February 7 near Ft. Davis, TX. The Pawnee Winter Run N Gun (http://www.okrunngun.com/) will be held near Pawnee, OK on January 17, 2015. If you are interested in training for either of these events please let me know. I’d be happy to work with you.

Personal, Individualized Firearms Training… If you are interested in personal, individualized firearms training for yourself, you and a group of your friends, or for your business contact me and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs. We’ll begin by consulting with you to determine what your training needs are or what you would like to accomplish. Together we’ll decide how to best meet those needs. Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals, businesses or small groups. Classes can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Scheduling is very flexible.
Regular Monthly Announcements (Reminders)… You need to take a Refresher (re-qualification) course two years after you receive your New Mexico concealed handgun license and you need to take a Renewal class and apply to NMDPS for your concealed carry license to be renewed after four years. Take a look at your license periodically and make sure you take those classes. If you are in need of either the Refresher or Renewal classes, contact me and we can schedule your class.
To Learn Which Restaurants Sell Beer and Wine Only… You may carry your concealed handgun in a restaurant in New Mexico that is licensed to sell beer and wine only. This is known as a Restaurant License. Go to http://rldverification.rld.state.nm.us/Verification/Search.aspx?facility=Y and do a search. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a restaurant license in that particular county. And remember… you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.
Tip of the Month… The holidays generally have the potential for an increase in the crime rate so you need to be especially aware as you do your shopping for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are a lot more people out and about and there will always be someone who will want to take advantage. And you will have money or packages or both. Live defensively, just as you drive defensively, by always looking out for the other person, always knowing what is in your environment and avoiding things that could pose a threat.
In closing… I would like to thank you all for a good year and have enjoyed working with those who have taken classes. And to each of you…have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!
