December 2013

Interesting Thought (and a funny story)… One of my students was recently called for jury duty. Knowing she couldn’t carry her handgun into the courthouse she dutifully took it out of her purse and left it in her vehicle. When she went through the courthouse security, they discovered she had neglected to remove her extra magazine. They were reasonable about it, holding the magazine for her and returning it when she left the courthouse for the day. When addressing prospective jurors, the judge commented that it would be a good idea to make sure that you don’t try to bring any weapons, knives or magazines like they found on one of their prospective jurors that morning.  The moral of the story is when you must go into an area or a building where you can not carry your handgun, check very carefully and make sure that you have removed anything (handgun, extra magazines, knives, etc.) that is prohibited prior to entering. In this story courthouse security was reasonable about what happened, realizing that there was no intent to violate courthouse security. In other times or places you might not be so lucky and may face some serious consequences. My student was a bit embarrassed in this situation, but the repercussions could have been far worse. Check and make sure that you are ‘clean’ before entering.

To Learn Which Restaurants Sell Beer and Wine Only… You may carry your concealed handgun in a restaurant in New Mexico that is licensed to sell beer and wine only. This is known as a Restaurant License. Go to and do a search. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a restaurant license in that particular county. And remember… you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

Monthly Reminder… I know you get tired of me repeating this, but you would be surprised how many people contact me when they realized that they are late doing their Refresher or simply forgot until they saw it in the newsletter…so here it is…you need to take a Refresher (re-qualification) course two years after you receive your New Mexico concealed handgun license and you need to take a Renewal class and apply to NMDPS for your concealed carry license to be renewed after four years. Take a look at your license periodically and make sure you take those classes. If you are in need of either the Refresher or Renewal classes, contact me and we can schedule your class.

Tip of the Month… Cold weather has arrived. This means extra clothes and for some, gloves. Practice accessing, drawing and shooting your handgun in your winter clothes and gloves. You will find it is much different than shooting in your warm weather clothing. Just remember the basic safety rules while you are doing this…it can be awkward until you figure out how to make it work for you.

Gift Certificates… The Christmas season is upon us. As you are doing your Christmas shopping, consider giving a gift certificate for a concealed carry class or for any of the other classes that we teach, Gift certificates are also available for individual and private training as well. To purchase a gift certificate, or if you have any questions, contact me at or by phone at 575.430.3040.

In closing… Let’s not forget the reason for the season…Have a Merry Christmas and Be Safe!
