December 2012

Interesting Thought… The incident that occurred in the gun store in Silver City recently in which a customer was shot by an employee who was unloading a handgun was totally preventable and has a very important lesson for all of us. KEEP YOUR MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION! Had this gun store employee (who certainly should have known better) followed this basic safety rule (never point the muzzle at something you do not want to destroy) this unfortunate event would not have occurred. We have no details as to why the handgun discharged…but in reality the why is somewhat immaterial. Had the muzzle been pointing in a safe direction at the time of discharge, regardless of why the handgun discharged, the customer would not have been harmed. The point I am trying to get across is this…ALWAYS WATCH YOR MUZZLE! And keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. The safety rules are there for a reason, and when you violate any of them, something bad can happen. Think long and hard about this, and re-examine your firearm safety habits. And remember, as an anonymous sage once stated, ‘any issues of liability will be decided by a jury of 12 people who weren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty…’

December Concealed Carry Class… The next concealed carry class will be December 8 & 9. Gun Show December 1 & 2… Come and visit us at the gun show at the Tays Center here in Alamogordo at the gun show this week end.

Some Concealed Carry License Statistics… Total number of valid concealed carry licenses in New Mexico as of November 21, 2012 is 24,923. In Otero County there are 1,116, in Lincoln County 496 and Dona County 2105. This information is courtesy of the NM Concealed Carry Unit.

Concealed Carry in New Mexico State Parks… The hearing to change the regulation to allow concealed carry in state parks was held in Santa Fe on October 13. Several people spoke in favor of the proposed regulation change and no one spoke against it. I will keep you posted on what happens next.

Personal Firearms Training… Are you interested in a personal firearms trainer? Want to improve your shooting skills or focus on a particular skill or get ready for a hunting trip? Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Advanced Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals or small groups. Scheduling is very flexible. For more information about personal firearms training contact me at or by phone at 575.430.3040 and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs.

Refresher and Renewal… Don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). I have been doing these classes on request, so when you need your Refresher or Renewal please contact me at or by phone at 575.430.3040 and we’ll set up a time for your class.

New search site for going out to eat… To determine if the restaurant you want to go to has a restaurant license, go to and search for a Restaurant License in the appropriate county. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a beer and wine license in that particular county. And remember… you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

And Speaking of Restaurants… Memories Restaurant (which offers beer and wine with your meals) has a sign inside that says ‘CONCEALED HANDGUNS WELCOME’ and a reminder that you cannot consume alcohol while carrying. Si Senor’s and Our Country Kitchen are very supportive of Riclin Firearms Training teaching efforts. If you are thinking about going out to eat in Alamogordo go to these restaurants for a very good meal and say thank you to them for their support.

Tip of the Month… Cooler weather is coming. That means most of us will be wearing more or at least different clothes. You need to practice your presentation (draw) in your winter clothing so that you can do it smoothly and not get tangled up in your additional clothing. And remember, be sure your handgun is unloaded and you are pointing the muzzle in a safe direction when you practice your presentation.

In closing… The year is coming to an end. I would like to thank each of you for your support this past year and I look forward to training with you in 2013. Please let me know if there is any particular firearms training you are interested in…I’ll be glad to work with you.

And a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to each of you!
