December 2009

An Interesting Thought…I carry 100% of the time outside the castle. When I holster prior to departure, I always remind myself, consciously, of the responsibility that carrying entails prior to going out the door. I find that once out, even in the most challenging or frustrating encounters, in traffic, in stores or elsewhere, I may have, I find myself much more patient and much more prone to deescalating situations than I would otherwise. Carrying actually makes me calmer. Mike Marcon on GetoftheX forum.

January Concealed Carry Class…The January Concealed Carry Class will be held on January 9 & 10. If you are interested, or know of anyone else who might be interested in taking the class, please have them contact Richard at or 575.430.3040.

Report on Defensive Revolver Clinic…The Revolver Clinic we held on November 21 was very interesting for both the students and the instructors. We did a number of defensive revolver drills that enhanced the participant’s ability to use their revolvers defensively. After the clinic, they all felt it would be a good idea for us to teach a day long Defensive Revolver class.

Defensive Revolver Class…We will be offering a Defensive Revolver Class in the near future. This will be an opportunity to learn how to use your revolver defensively. We will begin with doing several drills and then evolve into some interesting scenarios. I will keep you posted as we work out the logistics.

Night Class…The night class scheduled for Saturday January 16 is full. If you are interested another night class please let me know and I will see what I can schedule.

Individual or Specialized Classes…If you have specific needs not met by our regular classes, or are interested in a different kind of training, please get in touch with me. I’d be glad to work with you or your group. These classes can be one of our regular classes taught on an individual basis or can be set up to work with your particular needs or interests and around your schedule.

Reminder about your Refresher or Renewal…Check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). Many people with 4 year concealed carry licenses are coming up for renewal so take a look at your license and see where you are in terms of needing either the Refresher or the Renewal call. It might be wise to mark the appropriate dates on your calendar (I did) so you don’t forget. Contact Richard at or 575.430.3040 if you need either class or if you have any questions.…is a locally run concealed carry forum that is running an interesting November – December contest. Go visit them at and get involved in the debate. There is also interesting conversation and information. Take a few minutes and visit and sign up if you are not already a member.

Tip of the Month…Learn to recognize objects in every room of your home (and anyplace else you happen to be) that could be used as makeshift weapons. If you are ever attacked, it will very likely be without much of a warning and will be at a ‘most inconvenient moment…’ and you may either not have your concealed handgun at the time or it may be inaccessible. Seeing various objects as weapons can give you a means to respond in the event you are otherwise unarmed.

Couples Class…We are considering a Couples Class for couples that have their concealed carry permits and want to learn how to maximize their security and safety by working together. Contact Richard at if you would be interested.

Supporters…Thank you to all our supporters. Both James at Basin Firearms (575.430.0541) and Wyatt at the Gun Rack (575.443.1528) will make you a good deal and can order whatever you want. Larry at Fire Power Gun and Pawn of Ruidoso (575.257.3943) supports Riclin students by giving discounts and passing out information about our classes. Robert at the Wal Mart (575.434.5870) Sporting Good Department also supports Riclin Firearms Training, LLC. And welcome to our new supporter, Ricochet Shooting Sports. Stop by and see Clint or give him a call (575.434.GUNS). We encourage you to patronize these fine businesses that cater to shooters.

In closing…As I mentioned last month, during the holiday season you need to think about being extra careful when you are out and about. Remember that awareness is the price of your safety. Always be aware of who is in your environment and avoid those people and situations that make you feel uncomfortable. And have a Merry Christmas!
