Christmas 2014

Interesting Thought… Sent by a friend, these two events are definitely something to think about…Australia has some pretty tough gun laws. Yet consider the following…

Sydney, Australia, Monday morning, 15 Dec:  A guy walks into a cafe with a shotgun.  16 plus hour standoff, with hundreds of police, begins.  Area businesses shut down for a day, thousands of dollars in lost revenue.  Thousands of dollars spent on police effort.  News media around the world spending millions of dollars covering the siege.  Other nations monitoring the situation, ready to give aid to Australian government, if needed.  Police finally take action.  Bad guy dead, 2 citizens dead, 4 citizens wounded.

Compare that to…

Las Cruces, NM, Sunday evening, 14 Dec (virtually the same time):  A guy walks into a “Smoke Shop” with a shotgun.  Store clerk is armed with a 9mm.  In less then a minute, bad guy is dead.  Police called to process the scene and take a report.  Area businesses parking slightly inconvenienced because of cop cars.  Area TV news media has a 20 second blurb on the evening news and the area news paper has a small article the next day. Prosecutor reportedly declines to press charges.

Food for thought…

Upcoming Classes and Events…

January Concealed Carry class will be Saturday January 10 & Sunday January 11.
Renewal class January 19 (we can do Refreshers as well).
Couples Class (with SAFE) in Las Cruces January 24, 2015 (see below).

I am doing Renewal and Refresher classes on request. If you need your Renewal or Refresher let me know and we’ll schedule your class. I have been doing these classes individually or in small groups for some time now and people seem to like this way of doing the classes.
If you are interested in a particular class that isn’t currently in our calendar, or have a group of friends you would like to take a class with, let me know and we’ll make it happen.

Calling All Couples… Riclin Firearms Training and SAFE in Las Cruces will be offering a class tailored for couples in Las Cruces on January 24 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This class will focus on couples working together as a team. It will include both daylight and night sessions and will feature scenarios similar to what couples may encounter. This class is NOT for beginners. Couples must have a concealed carry license or similar training (this will be strictly enforced). Couples with a non shooting member are also encouraged to attend. For more information or to sign up for the class contact Richard at of Coralie at

Run and Gun Events…  We are in the process of training for the WesTex Run and Gun event which will be held near Ft. Davis, TX on February 7. If you are interested in training for this event please let me know. I’d be happy to work with you.

Personal, Individualized Firearms Training… If you are interested in personal, individualized firearms training for yourself, you and a group of your friends, or for your business contact me and I’d be happy to visit with you about meeting your training needs. We’ll begin by consulting with you to determine what your training needs are or what you would like to accomplish. Together we’ll decide how to best meet those needs. Any of the classes Riclin offers, from Individual Training Sessions, Concealed Carry, Defensive Handgun, Defensive Carbine and Shotgun classes, as well as Basic Firearms Training, can be done on a personal training basis for individuals, businesses or small groups. Classes can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Scheduling is very flexible. This would make a great Christmas Gift Certificate!

Regular Monthly Announcements (Reminders)…

You need to take a Refresher (re-qualification) course two years after you receive your New Mexico concealed handgun license and you need to take a Renewal class and apply to NMDPS for your concealed carry license to be renewed after four years. Take a look at your license periodically and make sure you take those classes. If you are in need of either the Refresher or Renewal classes, contact me and we can schedule your class.

To Learn Which Restaurants Sell Beer and Wine Only… You may carry your concealed handgun in a restaurant in New Mexico that is licensed to sell beer and wine only. This is known as a Restaurant License. Go to and do a search. You can enter the name of the restaurant and see what kind of license they have, or you can get a list of all the restaurants with a restaurant license in that particular county. And remember… you cannot consume alcohol while you are carrying your concealed handgun.

Tip of the Month… Be especially aware as you prepare and enjoy your Christmas holidays. There are a lot more people out and about and some of them might not be as honest as you are and will be looking at ways to take advantage of you. Live defensively, just as you drive defensively, by always looking out for the other person, always knowing what is in your environment and avoiding things that could pose a threat.

In closing… As the year draws to a close I’d like to thank the following local restaurants and businesses that have helped make this year a success. They include Si Senor’s, Our Country Kitchen, Casa de Suenos, Wal-Mart and Western Auto. Also the Postal Annex in Ruidoso. Thank you for your support!   And to everyone…Merry Christmas! I look forward to training with you next year.
