April 2010

An Interesting Thought…This month a couple of interesting thoughts attributed to George Washington (from www.thinkexist.com) … “Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples’ liberty’s teeth.” and “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.” Something to think about.

How to Find Restaurants with Beer and Wine Licenses…this web site tells you how to search the data base of the NM Regulation and Licensing Division to determine which restaurants have a beer and wine (or restaurant) license. Go to www.nm-ccw.com/Beer&Wine.html and follow the directions. Thanks to Steve Aikens (who developed www.handgunlaw.us) for developing this very useful tool. And remember, if you are carrying a concealed handgun in one of these establishments (after the changes in the law goes into effect on July 1), you may NOT consume any alcohol.

May Concealed Carry Class…The May Concealed Carry Class will be held on May 8 & 9. If you are interested, or know of anyone else who might be interested in taking the class, please have them contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or at riclin@tularosa.net.

Private, Individual or Specialized Classes…More and more people are either taking individual classes or setting up private classes for their groups or businesses. If you have specific needs not met by our regular classes or scheduling, or are interested in a different kind of training, please get in touch with me. These classes can be one of our regular classes taught on an individual basis or a class can be set up to work with your particular needs or interests and around your schedule.

Renewal/Refresher Class…We will be doing a Renewal/Refresher Class on April 24. If you are interested, or know of anyone else who might be interested in taking the class, please have them contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or at riclin@tularosa.net. See reminder below.

Defensive Shotgun Class…I have developed a lesson plan for a 6 hour Defensive Shotgun Class and will be scheduling one in the near future. Please let me know (575.430.3040 or at riclin@tularosa.net) if you would be interested in taking this class.

Tip of the Month…With summer approaching, we are all spending more time going out and about. ALWAYS be aware of what is in your environment no matter where you are. The first thing you should do when you are visiting anyplace is to consciously make yourself aware of your surroundings and mentally notice any and all exits so that you know how to get out. Recognize that there may be people who are possible threats. Be aware of people who look or act differently than the rest or who want to get to close to you. ‘People watching’ is not only just a past time but also a tool that can be used as a survival skill, keeping your situational awareness where it needs to be. Be safe.

Supporters…Thank you to all our supporters. Both James at Basin Firearms (575.430.0541) and Wyatt at the Gun Rack (575.443.1528) will make you a good deal and can order whatever you want. Larry at Fire Power Gun and Pawn of Ruidoso (575.257.3943) supports Riclin students by giving discounts and passing out information about our classes. Robert at the Wal Mart (575.434.5870) Sporting Good Department also supports Riclin Firearms Training, LLC. Bill at The Gunsmith Works in Capitan (575.354.0491) is also a supporter. And welcome to our new supporter, Ricochet Shooting Sports, located at Hwy 54 and the La Luz turn off. Stop by and see Clint or give him a call (575.434.GUNS). David Locke of the Postal Annex in Ruidoso (575.973.1049) has been setting up classes in Ruidoso. We encourage you to patronize these fine businesses that cater to and support shooters.

Reminder about your Refresher or Renewal…Check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). Many people with 4 year concealed carry licenses are coming up for renewal so take a look at your license and see where you are in terms of needing either the Refresher or the Renewal and give me a call (575.430.3040). It might be wise to mark the appropriate dates on your calendar (I did) so you don’t forget. Contact me if you need either class or if you have any questions.

In closing…As I get closer to retirement from my ‘real’ job I am looking forward to being able to devote more time to firearms training. After overcoming a number of computer problems, I have finally finished collating the results of the surveys that I sent out in January. Thanks to all of you who responded. I will be making some changes, expanding and enhancing Riclin Firearms Training, LLC based on many of your comments. I’ll keep you posted.
