July 2011

An Interesting Thought A superior man, when resting in safety, forgets not that peril is ever present. When in a state of security, he forgets not that ruin is only a breath away. When all is orderly, he forgets not that chaos ever hovers over him. Thus, his state and clans are preserved. Attributed to Confucius. This is a reminder that the world is not a safe place, and if you watch the news, it isn’t getting any safer. You always need to prepared and ready to respond to any situation that poses a threat to you and your loved ones. Think about it!

Tip of the Month… When you travel, make use of www.handgunlaw.us to learn what the laws, rules and regulation are for the states you will be traveling in. I recently traveled to Montana (which meant driving through Colorado and Wyoming as well) and was able to figure out where I could and couldn’t carry in those three states. Steve and Gary are doing us all a great service by developing and maintaining this very useful site.

July Concealed Carry Class…July 9 & 10…this is our regular monthly concealed carry class. Completion of this class meets the training requirement for a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License and enables you to apply for that license. If you have any questions, or would like to sign up for the class, contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040.

Ladies Advanced Defensive Handgun Class… July 23 at the Butterfield Trail Shooting Range in Las Cruces. We will start in the late afternoon with defensive drills and scenarios and continue after dark (remember, the vast majority of assaults on women occur after dark) to give you the opportunity to do the drills in the daylight and the dark. This class will greatly expand your defensive abilities with the handgun.

Ladies Concealed Carry Group… The dinner at Si Senor’s on June 9 was well attended. Everyone seemed to have a good time socializing and meeting spouses and guests. We will plan on doing another social event in the future.

The Ladies Only IPSC match sponsored by the Otero Practical Pistol Association (OPSA) on June 18 went very well. Seventeen ladies attended and had a very good time. There were four stages, including the ‘infamous’ Texas Star. Many thanks to the volunteers from OPSA who made this match a success!

The next meeting of the group will be on July 14 at the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ at 6:30 pm. Ladies, please come and join us and bring a friend.

Las Cruces Ladies Concealed Carry Group…This ladies group will be meeting on July 20 from 6:30 – 8 at the Command Bunker at 415 S. Valley in Las Cruces. All ladies are welcome. Whether you are in Las Cruces that day, or make a trip over just for the meeting, you will find this a very interesting group of ladies.

Specialty Classes… We now offer a variety of specialty classes, including…

  • Night Classes (learn to shoot at night…this is when most defensive situations occur and shooting at night is much different than shooting in the daylight)
  • Defensive Shotgun (learn to use your shotgun in a close quarters self defense situation)
  • Defensive Carbine, (learn to use your AR, AK, 10/22 or lever action rifle in a close quarters self defense situation)
  • Advanced Defensive Handgun Class (advanced defensive handgun shooting techniques)
  • Women’s Advanced Defensive Handgun Class, (advanced defensive handgun shooting techniques oriented towards women’s unique situations)

If you are interested in taking one of these classes, please contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 and we can discuss putting a class together. My teaching schedule is very flexible and can certainly accommodate your training and scheduling needs.

Private, Individual or Specialized Classes… If your particular training needs are not being met by our regular classes, or you desire some on-on-one instruction to improve your shooting skills, please let me know. I’m willing to travel to your locale if we can work out the logistics.

Refresher and Renewal Classes… Don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). Let me know if you need to take either of these classes and we’ll arrange a time to do them. Note…I will be doing a Renewal class on July 7. Contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040 if you would like to take this class.

Supporters… Thank you to all our supporters (and my apologies to any I have forgotten).

In closing… It is hot outside, but we are training in the heat anyway. Look at the heat as an opportunity…you really should train in all weather conditions…you never know when you may need the skills you develop while training. Stay safe!

An Interesting Thought… I found this comment on a forum somewhere and thought it was a very good analogy…so here it is, with apologies for not remembering exactly where I found it…Regarding the feeling of it not being necessary to carry a concealed handgun I always use this analogy…although I’ve been driving for almost 40 years and have only needed to use a spare tire once in that time, I would never drive a mile without having a spare and I bet most of you agree. Most of us will never use our guns in a self defense situation but like a spare tire that you rarely if ever use your every day carry gun is a tool that more than likely you’ll never use but if you ever need it you’ll be glad that you had it. Carry your guns! For me it is a part of getting dressed…underwear, pants, belt, holster, gun, same thing every day and hopefully, like that spare tire in the car, I’ll never need to put the gun to use.

Tip of the Month… Practice with the pistol that you carry. And I don’t mean just stand there and shoot. I mean practice the way you spend your day. For example, most of us spend a lot of time sitting down every day. Therefore you should practice drawing while sitting down. This can be done at home as part of your dry fire routine (and remember the safety rules apply to dry firing as well). Practice while sitting at a table, in an easy chair, in an office chair…anywhere you are liable to sit. Then on your next trip to the range do some shooting while you are seated…you will be surprised how well you do and will see your confidence increase. And remember, like your spare tire, you never know when you may need it!

June Concealed Carry Class… June 11 & 12…this is our regular monthly concealed carry class. Completion of this class meets the training requirement for a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License and enables you to apply for that license. If you have any questions, or would like to sign up for the class, contact me or call 575.430.3040.

Ladies Concealed Carry Group… We have two upcoming events. First is the next meeting on June 9 at 6:00 at Si Senor’s. This will be a social event and you are welcome to bring your spouse. Please email me to let me know you will be attending. The second event will be a Ladies Only IPSC match on June 18 to introduce the ladies to the exciting world of competition shooting. This event will be sponsored by the Otero Practical Shooting Association and will be held at the Sidney Paul Gordon Shooting Range in La Luz. All ladies are welcome. Come and join us and bring a friend. You will need your pistol, holster, extra magazines/speed loaders and about 100 rounds of ammunition. I can guarantee you will have a good time.

Las Cruces Ladies Concealed Carry Group… A group similar to our Alamogordo Ladies Concealed Carry Group has formed in Las Cruces. They meet on the third Wednesday of the month from 6:30 – 8 at the Command Bunker at 415 S. Valley. Their next meeting will be June 15.  All ladies are welcome.

An Interesting Thought… Most wisdom does not arise from intellect, but rather from experience and the ability to recognize the world around you for what it is, rather than what you wish it to be. - Phil Messina, President, Modern Warrior Inc. Think about that thought…there is a lot of wisdom in it.

Tip of the Month… a reading assignment…read Principles of Personal Defense by Jeff Cooper. It is an excellent guide to the mental conditioning aspects of self defense and will give you a lot to think about. Available from Amazon.com.

May Concealed Carry Class… May 14 & 15…this is our regular monthly concealed carry class. Completion of this class meets the training requirement for a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License and enables you to apply for that license. If you have any questions, or would like to sign up for the class, contact me at riclin@tularosa.net or by phone at 575.430.3040.

For the Ladies…the Ladies Concealed Carry Group has been a great success so far. In addition to the four monthly meetings so far, we had a Ladies CCW Shooting Clinic on February 19 and a Gun Cleaning Clinic on March 28. Both of these were well attended. The Otero Practical Shooting Association will be putting on a Ladies Only IPSC match on June 18 to introduce the ladies to the exciting world of competition shooting. The next meeting of the group will be Thursday May 12 at the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ in Alamogordo at 6:30 pm. Bring a friend! All ladies are welcome!

Newsletter Update March 2011

Hello Everyone!

You probably noticed that you did not receive a February or March newsletter from Riclin Firearms Training, LLC. In February my computer crashed, leaving me without access to my mailing list. At the same time my web site was being redesigned. It has taken longer than I had hoped, but the email list will be up and running shortly and I will send out a newsletter as soon as I can. The web site has been completely redone. Stop by and take a look at www.riclin.net. I’d appreciate your comments. We aren’t quite finished yet, but we have made a lot of progress.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding as Riclin Firearms Training, LLC goes through this rebuilding process. I will be publishing a revised annual calendar soon.

Richard

January 2011

An Interesting Thought…“Let us speak courteously, deal fairly, and keep ourselves armed and ready.” Attributed to Theodore Roosevelt. Add always be aware and you will have some good words to live by, especially in today’s uncertain world.

Tip of the Month…Have you done any dry firing lately? You would be surprised how just a few minutes a day will greatly improve your shooting. First, make sure you handgun is unloaded. Second, make sure your handgun is unloaded. Find a point on a wall (make sure it is a solid wall that could stop a bullet if for some reason you forgot the first two steps) and line the sights up and slowly pull the trigger. Pull the trigger slowly enough so sights don’t move when the hammer falls or the striker goes forward. Once you can do it repeatedly without your handgun moving, pull the trigger a little faster. You will be surprised how much your shooting will improve with just a little bit of regular dry firing. Next month we’ll discuss Part 2 of dry firing.

Ladies Concealed Carry Group…the organizational meeting of an informal women’s concealed carry networking group to offer support and encouragement to women who have a concealed carry license, or are interested in obtaining a license, was held January 13 and was a big success. A total of 31 women attended, ranging from very experienced with concealed carry to some who had their license but were not yet confident enough to carry a concealed handgun to several who were interested in receiving the training and obtaining their license. The participants unanimously decided to continue meeting on a monthly basis.

The next meeting will be Thursday February 10 from 6:30 pm until approximately 8:00 pm at the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ, 1300 Cuba Avenue. If you are a woman with a concealed carry license (whether you are actively carrying a concealed handgun or not) or are interested in obtaining a concealed carry license, you are welcome to attend. You do not have to be a student of Riclin Firearms Training, LLC to participate. Please tell your friends of this meeting. If you are planning on attending or would like more information, please contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or riclin@tularosa.net or Beth at 575.434.4824 or bblankenship@tularosa.net. Please take advantage of this opportunity to meet with other women who are carrying a concealed handgun, to share stories of how you have adjusted to carrying and to encourage others who are experiencing difficulties in carrying.

Going Out To Eat…To determine if a particular restaurant has Restaurant license (which according to the NM Alcohol and Gaming Division means they can only sell beer and wine) go to http://164.64.87.25/MyLicenseVerification/Search.aspx?facility=Y. December 2010

An Interesting Thought…”What are you going to do if the fight starts RIGHT NOW?”…Bill Davidson of Tac Pro Shooting Center in Texas…the point he is making is that an attack can occur at any moment. Are you ready if it happens right now? What would you do? Ask yourself this question on a regular basis…you will be surprised what it will do for your general level of awareness.

Christmas Special…Give the Gift of Concealed Carry to a Friend or Loved One…Purchase

a gift certificate for a concealed carry class for someone important in your life and receive a 10% discount on the class fee.

Tip of the Month…(actually a story from a lady student but there is a lot to be learned from it)…My mom and I were recently in Las Cruces at the Mesilla Valley Mall just last week. Not long ago a friend of mine had her car broken into in broad daylight near the Sears entrance of the same mall. I have always been very alert of my surroundings there anyway and most certainly at the mall because of what happened to my friend.  I did have the feeling of a potential problem situation. It was dark, we were carrying several shopping bags, and two women alone may look vulnerable to a would-be troublemaker.  Like I said, I am of the attitude that I simply REFUSE to be a victim, not without a fight anyway.  So before I even left the mall I had my .380 accessible and just upon leaving the building, I discreetly pulled it out and had it in my hand, just in case.  That is when I noticed a group of thugs, looking up to no good.  Like I said, there never was problem, but had there been, I would have been a little more prepared for having thought ahead and making myself ready. I like to think that our confidence showed itself in our body language. We made it to our vehicle with no problem, and only then did we each realize that the other had her gun in her hand, ready for anything that might occur.  This had not been something that we had discussed…we just both naturally made the choice to do it.

Many women are not aware of their surroundings enough, myself included. I see myself and my mom as well as pretty confident women. We have practiced and are comfortable with our guns and would not hesitate to use them if the situation called for it. I think that women need to make themselves comfortable and confident, otherwise it will all be for naught.

For the Ladies…Please plan on attending an organizational meeting of an informal women’s concealed carry networking group. The purpose of the group is to offer support and encouragement to women who have a concealed carry license, or are interested in obtaining a license. The organizational meeting will be held Thursday, January 13 from 6:30 pm until approximately 8:00 pm at the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ, 1300 Cuba Avenue. We hope this will be an opportunity for you to meet with other women who are carrying a concealed handgun, to share stories of how you have adjusted to carrying and to encourage others who are experiencing difficulties in carrying.

Annual Calendar…I have been working on an annual calendar which will be posted on my web site soon.

October 2010

An Interesting Thought… Modern experience has revealed that simply carrying a gun and being a good shot is not enough to prevail in today’s urban battlefields. The shooter, if he is to be victorious and survive, must have a certain level of condition and fitness. The fight may happen unexpectedly, and the shooter may need to move quickly to cover, off the line of fire, or even in some cases, physically fight against an antagonist…from One Source Tactical promoting their new DVD, Combat Fit. I agree with this concept and have purchased this DVD and have started on their program. The exercises look deceptively simple but I was sore from the first day. I will keep you posted on my progress…but in the meantime give this some serious thought…

Last Minute Refresher Class October 21… I will be doing a Refresher class on Friday October 21. If you need to do a Renewal class we can do that as well. I realize that this is a last minute notice, but let me know if you need to do either class. If October 21 doesn’t fit into your schedule, contact me about scheduling a class time that works for you.

Night Class in Las Cruces…Coralie Carrier of SAFE in Las Cruces and I will be teaching a Night Class in Las Cruces on Friday evening October 29. This will be a good opportunity to practice some defensive shooting after dark (remember, the vast majority of defensive encounters occur in low light conditions). For more information and to see a flyer about the class, go to http://www.safeinlc.com and click on Night Shoot button on the left side of the site.

Possible Couples Class…Several couples indicated an interest in a Couples Class. I will be scheduling one in the not too distant future.

Going Out To Eat…To determine if a particular restaurant has Restaurant license (which according to the NM Alcohol and Gaming Division means they can only sell beer and wine) go to http://164.64.87.25/MyLicenseVerification/Search.aspx?facility=Y. Remember, you may not consume alcohol while you are in possession of your concealed firearm. And if you see any restaurants with signs indicating that you are not welcome with your concealed handgun, please let me know.

For the Ladies…If you are interested in a concealed carry purse, Cressie Mitchell at Mountain Magic in Cloudcroft (504 Burro Ave, 575.682.2348) is now stocking several purses by Gun Toten’ Mamas. They appear to be well made and Cressie will give Riclin students a 10% discount. Give her a call or stop by and see her.

Upcoming Classes…Here is a list of upcoming classes. Please contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or by email at riclin@tularosa.net if you have any questions or would like to sign up for a class.

  • October 21                                    Renewal/Refresher Class
  • October 29                                    Night Class (Las Cruces, NM)
  • November 13 & 14                        November Concealed Carry Class
  • December 11& 12                        December Concealed Carry Class

Private, Individual or Specialized Classes… If your particular training needs not being met by our regular classes, or you desire some on-on-one instruction to improve your shooting skills, please let me know. I’m willing to travel to your locale if we can work out the logistics.

Tip of the Month…Practice shooting in awkward conditions…sitting in a chair or lying on the floor or lying on your side are a few examples. While going to the range and standing there and shooting at stationary targets is fun, it really doesn’t prepare you for what you will probably encounter on a defensive situation. You will probably be surprised (the bad guy isn’t liable to attack if he knows you are ready for him) and off balance. And winter is coming…get out here and shoot in the cold, wearing your warm heavy clothing. You’ll be surprised how awkward it is trying to draw your handgun while wearing gloves and while you are covered with several layers of clothing. And while you are at it, practice shooting with cold hands as well. Get out and practice in the ‘less than ideal conditions.’

Refresher and Renewal Classes…Don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). Our next Renewal/Refresher class will be Friday October 21. If a week end class would fit into your schedule better just let me know.

An Interesting Thought…The following thought is attributed to Annie Oakley“I would like to see every woman know how to handle firearms as naturally as they know how to handle babies.” Not a bad idea.

Ladies…If you haven’t already done so, you might want to check out the Women and Guns forum at http://womenandguns.servertalk.in/womenandguns-forum-1.html. It is a forum about women and self defense and concealed carry.

Possible Couples Class…Are any couples (married or otherwise) interested in a Couples Class? The class will be designed for couples who may find themselves in a defensive situation. While there will be shooting, the primary purpose of the class would be to encourage couples to communicate with each other on how they would deal with a deadly threat in the various scenarios. The class would be open to couples who both have their concealed carry permit as well as couples in which only one has a concealed carry permit. Let me know if you are interested. If there is enough interest I’ll schedule a class for sometime this fall.

Upcoming Classes…Here is a list of upcoming classes. Please contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or by email at riclin@tularosa.net if you have any questions or would like to sign up for a class.

  • October 2                         Women’s Advanced Defensive Handgun Class (Las Cruces, NM)…note this is a new class
  • October 9 & 10                        October Concealed Carry Class
  • October  16 & 17                        Ruidoso Concealed Carry Class
  • October 29                                    Night Class (Las Cruces, NM)
  • November 13 & 14                        November Concealed Carry Class

Private, Individual or Specialized Classes…More and more people are taking advantage of individual or private classes.  If you have particular training needs not being met by our regular classes, or want some on-on-one instruction to improve your shooting skills, please let me know. I’m willing to travel to your locale if we can work out the logistics.

Tip of the Month… One of our lady students demonstrated an excellent mind set recently. We were doing some pretty advanced drills and she slipped and fell. Rather than complain about getting hurt/dirty/being embarrassed about falling, she came up shooting. Afterwards, she told me that she knew she had to shoot the target and never thought about anything else. The lesson is this…whenever you are shooting/training, and things don’t go as planned, use the situation as an opportunity to enhance your skills and keep on going. The more you do things ‘out of the box’ the more prepared you will be in the event that you are faced with a dangerous situation.

Refresher and Renewal Classes…Don’t forget to check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). If you need either one just let me know and  I’ll be glad to schedule a class.

An Interesting Thought…Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It’s a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don’t get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait. From www.defensivecarry.com.

New Class for Women…In our efforts to help women take more control of their personal safety, Riclin Firearms Training, LLC (Alamogordo) and SAFE, LLC (Las Cruces) are joining forces to offer a Women’s Advanced Defensive Handgun class on October 2, 2010 in Las Cruces. This class will include drills and scenarios similar to situations women may find themselves in. Because many assaults on women occur at night, a night shooting segment will be included. For more information, contact Richard at 575.430.3040 riclin@tularosa.net or Coralie at 575.644.1692 safeinlc@aol.com. Enrollment will be limited.

Defensive Shotgun Class…The Defensive Shotgun class on July 24 went very well. We did a lot of shooting on the move, lots of reloading and some interesting scenarios. Look for another Defensive Shotgun class in the fall after the weather cools down a bit.

Ruidoso Gun Show…I will be at the Ruidoso Gun Show on September 4 & 5. I’ll be at Doug Reynolds DCR Enterprises table. He is the one with lots of tables and lots of interesting guns. Stop by and say hello! I’ll have some class information available for anyone interested.

Concealed Carry in Restaurant with Beer and Wine Licenses (Restaurant License)…The law has been in effect for about six weeks now and I haven’t heard of anyone having any problems. Go to http://164.64.87.25/MyLicenseVerification/Search.aspx?facility=Y to determine if a particular restaurant has Restaurant license (which, according to the NM Alcohol and Gaming Division means they can only sell beer and wine).

Refresher and Renewal Classes…This is a reminder to heck the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). Many people with 4 year concealed carry licenses are coming up for renewal so take a look at your license and see where you are in terms of needing either the Refresher or the Renewal and give me a call (575.430.3040). I’ll be glad to schedule a class on request. Contact me if you need either class or if you have any questions.

An Interesting Local Forum…Concealcarrychat.com is a local concealed carry forum that has a lot of good information on it. And they support Riclin Firearms Training, LLC. They can be found at http://www.concealcarrychat.com/. Stop by and say Hello and get involved in their discussions.

Tip of the Month… How physically fit are you? If you end up a confrontation that gets physical, do you have the fitness to deal with that? Most of us need to be more physically fit. Take some time every day to do some form of exercise. As you get older, exercise becomes even more important because it helps slow down some of the aches and pains we get as we age. Even if you have some disabilities there is some form of exercise you can do. Experiment, and see what you can do. You might be surprised.

In closing…I have revised the format of this newsletter somewhat. Let me know what you think. I would appreciate your input.

An Interesting Thought…“Criticism is necessary and useful; it is often indispensable; but it can never take the place of action, or be even a poor substitute for it. The function of the mere critic is of very subordinate usefulness. It is the doer of deeds who actually counts in the battle for life, and not the man who looks on and says how the fight ought to be fought, without himself sharing the stress and the danger.”…A comment attributed to Teddy Roosevelt…consider this in light of national events where it seems like the main impetus is to find fault (and head to the courthouse to sue) rather than putting our resources into solving the problem.

Next Concealed Carry Class…The next regular Concealed Carry Class will be held on August 7 & 8. If you are interested, or know of anyone else who might be interested in taking the class, please have them contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or at riclin@tularosa.net.

Defensive Shotgun Class…We will be teaching a Defensive Shotgun Class on Saturday July 24. This class will be a series of defensive drills combined with a couple of scenarios to enable you to become familiar with the defensive use of the shotgun. You will also have the opportunity to pattern your shotgun at various distances with birdshot, buckshot and slugs to see how your particular shotgun does with each. This class is not for beginners. You should be comfortable shooting your shotgun before considering taking this class. If you are interested in taking this class, contact Richard at them contact Richard at 575.430.3040 or at riclin@tularosa.net. Enrollment will be limited.

Private, Individual or Specialized Classes…I am getting a number of requests for the concealed carry class to be taught during the week or on an alternative schedule of some sort. I am more than willing to work with you to teach any of the classes offered by Riclin Firearms Training, LLC. Simply contact me and we’ll see what we can do to accommodate your needs. Or if you have specific needs not met by our regular classes or scheduling, or are interested in a different kind of training, please get in touch with me. Supporters…Thank you to all our supporters. David Locke of the Postal Annex in Ruidoso (575.973.1049) has been setting up classes in Ruidoso. Clint at Ricochet Shooting Sports, located at Hwy 54 and the La Luz turn off, (575.434.GUNS), will give you a good deal. Both James at Basin Firearms (575.430.0541) and Wyatt at the Gun Rack (575.443.1528) will make you a good deal and can order whatever you want. Larry at Fire Power Gun and Pawn of Ruidoso (575.257.3943) supports Riclin students by giving discounts and passing out information about our classes. Another Reminder about your Refresher or Renewal…Check the expiration date on your license to see if you need to take a Refresher (2 years after the issue date of your license) or a Renewal (2 months prior to the expiration date on your license). Many people with 4 year concealed carry licenses are coming up for renewal so take a look at your license and see where you are in terms of needing either the Refresher or the Renewal and give me a call (575.430.3040). Contact me if you need either class or if you have any questions.

Tip of the Month…You are probably tired of me saying you need to practice all the time, but an incident occurred this week end that reinforced to me the need to keep practicing. During a segment of the concealed carry class, I was demonstrating the importance of movement and distance. While trying to draw as I was moving off the line of attack, my hand grabbed a fistful of shirt instead of my pistol. While I felt a bit foolish in front of the class (after all, I’m supposed to know what I’m doing…), it graphically illustrated the need to continually practice accessing your handgun in a variety of positions, especially the awkward ones and also while you are moving.

In closing…As I am settling into retirement, I’m looking at ways to improve Riclin Firearms Training, LLC. I’ll keep you posted on whatever changes I make. As always, be aware and be safe.
