Survive Shooting One Handed

Shoot one handed often, with your weak hand only, as well as with your strong hand only! I know I have probably said this before, but in reading the March 2012 issue of Guns magazine I found an article by Massad Ayoob who states

“I’ve talked to guys who survived shooting weak-hand who would have been killed otherwise because their strong hand was out of commission, and I can’t help but notice that in some 40 years of NYPD gunfights, 38 percent or more have been 1-handed shooting events.”

This article reinforced to me that fact that you need to be ambidextrous in your shooting.

Former Professional Prosecutor Scheduled to Speak

Mary Ellen Keith, JD, a former professional prosecutor who is currently teaching law classes at NMSU in Alamogordo will be the speaker during the next meeting of the Alamogordo Ladies Concealed Carry Group. The meeting will take place on Tuesday April 10 at 6:30 at the Cuba Ave Church of Christ. . It should be an interesting program.

After giving it some serious thought, I think it is time for me to step down as the “leader” of the group. After all, this is a ladies group. As such, I think the leadership needs to come from the ladies, not from me. The group has been going for 15 months now and has accomplished a great deal, but now I think it is time for you all to take charge. I will be happy to continue to provide support for the group and assist in any way I can.

We will be discussing this during this April meeting. Please be thinking about ideas on how you would like to see the group evolve from here and whether or not you would be interested in taking a leadership role to help the group grow and expand and become even more of a support and social network for women who carry guns to protect themselves.

If you know someone else who may also be interested in concealed carry, whether they carry or not, invite them to the join us.

An Interesting Thought… ”Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It’s a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don’t get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.” There is a lot of truth in this statement from the Defensive Carry forum (www.defensivecarry.com/forum). Think about it…

Defensive Carbine Class ReCap and Comments

A recent attendee to our Defensive Carbine Class left us an amazing testimonial. I thought I would take a moment to review some of the things that the class offers and how it affected this particular individual.

The Defensive Carbine class was designed for gun enthusiasts who are interested in the defensive use of the semi-automatic carbine in a home or urban environment. Like DL, from the class said, “most people would never think of a Carbine as a short range weapon but it is a really effective once you learn how to use it.”

A variety of handling and defensive drills including malfunction drills, shooting in close quarters, shooting in various positions including prone and supine, shooting on the move, transition from carbine to handgun, and utilizing cover are taught and practiced during every defensive carbine class. DL commented that several drills were particularly eye-opening. As an instructor, this type of comment is always exciting to read – makes us realize that we really are making a difference.

DL sums it up nicely, noting that finishing up at the long range and shooting the steel buffalo from 365 yards really shows the versatility of the carbine type of weapon systems.

“I highly recommend that everyone, regardless of your experience with this style of weapon, take this class and learn the fundamentals. Great Class!” ~ DL

Well, thank you DL, we enjoyed having you in the class and hope to see you one of the other classes we offer in the near future.

Visit our Defensive Carbine Class page to see all of the class details. Additional information and classes can be found in our Upcoming Events section in the sidebar, behind the Calendar tab or scheduled upon request. Please feel free to contact us any time.

No decision is a Decision To Do Nothing

Get Off The X ForumHere are a couple of interesting comments from the GetofftheX forum. As you watch the news and see what is happening in our world today, give these thoughts some consideration…

“Resist! We each have a duty to ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors, our community, our city, our state and our country to resist criminals. Reasoning with a thug who believes that his failures are because of people just like you is not likely to be helpful…Resist!

How will you respond if you are confronted by evil as some of us have been in the past and some of us will be in the future? If you have not decided ahead of time what you will do, you will likely do nothing. Those who fight back often win and survive. Those who surrender never win and often die a horrible death. Have you made your decision? Remember, no decision is a decision to do nothing.”

Tip of the Month… You need to practice shooting in all sorts of awkward positions. It is very unlikely you will have the opportunity to assume a perfect Weaver or Isosceles stance to engage the bad guy. The position you use will be the one you happen to be in when the bad guy attacks. You need to be able to shoot from any position…sitting, standing, walking, lying down…you never know.

In closing… As you consider the thoughts at the beginning of this newsletter, think also about your defensive skill level. Do you feel adequately trained to deal with a violent confrontation? If not, consider some additional training. I’d be happy to help if I can!

Tale of the Traveling Gun

Tip of the Month… When you travel, make use of www.handgunlaw.us to learn what the laws, rules and regulation are for the states you will be traveling in. I recently traveled to Montana (which meant driving through Colorado and Wyoming as well) and was able to figure out where I could and couldn’t carry in those three states. Steve and Gary are doing us all a great service by developing and maintaining this very useful site.

Superman

Promotional art for Superman No.204 (vol. 2, April 2004) by Jim Lee and Scott Williams

A superior man, when resting in safety, forgets not that peril is ever present. When in a state of security, he forgets not that ruin is only a breath away. When all is orderly, he forgets not that chaos ever hovers over him. Thus, his state and clans are preserved.
Attributed to Confucius. This is a reminder that the world is not a safe place, and if you watch the news, it isn’t getting any safer. You always need to prepared and ready to respond to any situation that poses a threat to you and your loved ones. Think about it!
